We are excited to introduce the 2017 Passel Estate Lot 71 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.
This stunning wine had already won a SILVER medal from Decanter World Wine Awards 2022 a year prior to its release and was awarded another SILVER medal in the International Wine Challenge 2023 coinciding with its release in May 2023. Closer to home, respected wine writers in Western Australia have recently published glowing reviews of this elegant and expressive wine.
Winepilot’s Emma Farrelly awarded it an incredible 96 points, and had this to say:
“Decanted this for a few hours to allow the wine to reveal itself, and I’m glad I had the patience. I’ve long been a fan of the 2017 Cabernets from Margaret River…a beautiful vintage of restraint and elegance. This is just starting to develop some subtle secondary notes, warm leather, spice cupboard, tobacco leaf and white pepper. There are layers of dark ruby fruit complexity, with plenty of density and concentration. Tannins are tapered and long. A very smart wine.”
Awarding it 95 points in the West Australian Wine Review, Ray Jordan wrote:
“Elegance and style; that’s what the ’17 Margaret River vintage was all about. It was cool but very long, allowing the fruit to eventually ripen to reveal quite beautiful characters. On the nose you get a combination of dark fruits, minerals and graphite with a little black olive nuance. The palate is seamlessly structured with those fine tannins and well-managed oak focusing and supporting. A most poised cabernet. “
Showcasing our very best grapes, the 2017 Lot 71 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was crafted from select parcels of fruit from a single block of original plantings on the estate. It was matured for an extended period of 18 months in the finest French oak, and then spent further time aging in bottle before release. With its ultra fine tannin structure, this wine will continue to mature gracefully and can be cellared for several years.
Bracing aromas of red currants, blue berries and violets to start, further opening with time to reveal tones of cassis and wet slate. The palate enters focused and seamless, laced with tensile black and blue fruit tannin and extreme poise and persistence. A dark and brooding power lurks beneath the tight knit lattice of fruit and oak tension only to be unleashed with time.
