Whilst Australia’s South West attracts most of its visitors during the warmer months, we believe winter is a wonderful time of the year to visit the region’s cosy cellar doors to sample the elegant red wines for which the Margaret River Wine Region is world famous, as you admire lush green landscapes alongside our winter vineyard vistas.
Our vines have almost fully shed their golden-hued autumnal leaves as they transition to their important period of dormancy. When the vine leaves drop, dormancy helps the vines endure throughout winter, their roots grow and soak up soil nutrients and they are sustained by stored carbohydrate reserves ahead of bud-burst in spring.
Passel Estate’s bare mature vines in mid-winter reveal their characterful, gnarled trunks, contrasting magnificently against the beautiful tasting room garden, full dams and native bushland sanctuaries on the property.
As our viticulturist Andy and his team prepare to prune our vines ready for the growing season, our head winemaker, Bruce Dukes, has an exciting update to share about the new vintage wines that are currently in production, including the 2022 Passel Estate Chardonnay, which he says is already looking spectacular!
“The 2022 vintage was very solid, dry and warm due to glorious ripening conditions,” continues Bruce.
“The fruit was voluminous and rich, with intense acidity. Perfect sugar levels and flavour ripeness.”
“We are still doing lots of work on the lees and the barrels are imparting their own rich characters.”
We also recently tasted from barrel our 2021 Lot 71 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and 2021 Lot 71 Reserve Syrah, as they approach readiness for bottling and are happy to report that the Lot 71 Reserve wines have come together perfectly.
“You could write a whole description book about the Syrah, the more time you spend with this wine, the more characters there are coming out”, according to Bruce
We are excited to see how all of these wines progress under the watchful eye of our experienced winemaking team.
